There Is No Karma — You Are Merely Stitching Stories

A systems inquiry into cause and effect. No spirituality. No voodoo. Verify it yourself.

What This Is

This is the third inquiry in the Consciousness series — after You Do Not Exist and There Is No Free Will.

Same method: trace every claim to direct experience. If you can’t verify it there, it doesn’t survive.

No scripture. No authority. No “trust me.”

Part 1: The Claims

Not strawmen. Drawn from published works and public teachings — some verbatim, some faithful paraphrase.

Sadhguru (Karma, 2021): “Every thought, every emotion, every action leaves a residue. That residue is your karma. And it determines everything.”

Dalai Lama XIV: “If you want to know your past life, look at your present condition. If you want to know your future life, look at your present actions.”

Yogananda (Autobiography of a Yogi): The law of karma is as exact as gravity. Every cause produces its effect. No escape.

BK Shivani: Every thought creates your destiny. Your present is past thoughts. Your future is present thoughts. Scientific. Exact. Inescapable.

Deepak Chopra (The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success): Every action generates a force that returns in like kind. What you sow, you reap.

Rhonda Byrne (The Secret): “What you think about, you bring about. Your whole life is a manifestation of the thoughts that have gone on in your head.”

Ian Stevenson, M.D. (University of Virginia, 3,000+ cases): Children’s past-life memories — with verifiable details and birthmarks matching fatal wounds — suggest personality survives death and carries forward.

James Allen (As a Man Thinketh, 1903): “A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.”

The core claim: Your present is the direct result of past causes — thoughts, words, actions — from this life or previous ones. The universe is a closed causal loop. Nothing is random. Nothing is unjust. Everything is accounted for.

Part 2: The Inquiry

Round 1: Past-Life Karma

The claim: Your circumstances — body, family, suffering, fortune — are the result of actions in previous lives. The ledger carries forward.

The crack: Can you verify your own past life in direct experience?

No. Zero access. The claim requires believing children’s testimony, hypnotic regression, or gurus — all third-party, all unverifiable by you.

“Past life karma” explains everything — therefore it explains nothing. Any suffering: past-life debt. Any prosperity: past-life credit. The escape hatch is always open.

A theory that cannot be falsified cannot be verified. Same epistemic status as Santa Claus.

Collapsed.

Round 2: This-Life Cause & Effect

The claim: Forget past lives. Actions have consequences — observable, testable. The cruel person gets cancer. The generous neighbor thrives. Cause → effect.

The crack: The cruel person who dies wealthy at 94 — ignored. The generous neighbor who loses everything — ignored. Most politicians in many countries face criminal charges. They thrive. The poor laborer struggles forever.

This is confirmation bias. The mind counts hits, discards misses. For every “karmic” pattern, a thousand counterexamples exist.

The believer retreats: “Karma operates across lifetimes.” Returns to Round 1 — unfalsifiable.

Collapsed.

Round 3: Causation Itself

The claim: Drop a glass. It shatters. The shattering doesn’t happen without the dropping. This is not a story.

The crack: Glass dropped — one moment. Glass shattered — another moment. “Dropped AND shattered” — a chain constructed in the mind.

The universe doesn’t ship with arrows between events. Hume, 1739: we never observe causation. We observe sequence. The “because” is a habit of mind — not a feature of reality.

The glass contains no “because.” The shattering contains no “because of.” The “because” exists as an appearance in the observer — not as an observable thing inside either event.

Collapsed.

The Constellation

Before continuing — the mechanism that makes sense of everything that follows.

A clear night sky. Stars scattered. Random. Patternless.

A man draws lines between three stars. “Orion’s Belt.” More lines. “The Hunter.” Stories about battles, death, cosmic justice.

Another culture, same stars, different lines. “The Plow.” Different story.

The lines do not exist in the sky. No star connects to any other star. The connections are drawn by the observer. The sky is silent.

Now: your life.

Events arise. A loss. A gain. An illness. A meeting. The mind draws lines. “This happened because of that.” “I deserved this.” “They’ll get theirs.”

The lines do not exist in the events. The connections are drawn by the observer. Reality is silent.

The astronomer knows the lines aren’t in the sky. He draws them anyway — for navigation, for comfort. But he doesn’t confuse map with territory.

The karma believer confuses map with territory. Draws lines between events, calls the lines “law,” and suffers under a law that exists only in his drawing.

Stars = events. Lines = karma. The lines are not in the stars.

With this lens, the remaining rounds become demonstrations of the same phenomenon: every piece of karma is just another line the mind draws.

Round 4: The Self (Another Line)

The claim: There is a “you” who acts and a “you” who reaps. The self is the substrate of karma.

The crack: Dismantled in prior inquiries. The “I” is a post-hoc narration — always late, always claiming credit. Thoughts arise unbidden. Actions execute before awareness. No agent found.

The self is not a thing. It is a line the mind draws between thoughts, sensations, and memories — connecting them into “my life,” “my actions,” “my karma.”

No self = no one to accumulate karma. No one to carry it. No one to reap it.

Collapsed. The self is a constellation, not a star.

Round 5: Time, Memory, Space (More Lines)

The claim: Karma requires continuity. Action in the past → consequence in the future. Time, memory, and space provide the arena.

The crack: Whatever reality ultimately is, here is what direct experience reveals:

The past is experienced now — as memory. The future is experienced now — as anticipation. The connection between them is experienced now — as thought.

You never experience the past anywhere except now. You never experience the future anywhere except now.

Time is the mind comparing a memory-thought (arising now) with a perception (arising now) and calling the difference “change.” Memory is a thought arising now — not a window into a real past. Space is perception arising now — not a container.

All three are lines the mind draws across appearances. Remove them — no continuity. No continuity — no karma.

Collapsed. Time is a constellation, not a star.

Part 3: The Architecture

Karma is a house of cards. Five pieces of the story — each a line, not a star:

PieceWhat It Is
Past-life ledgerLine connecting this life to an unverifiable before
This-life cause/effectLine connecting selected events, ignoring the rest
Causation itselfLine labeled “because” drawn between two moments
The selfLine connecting thoughts and memories into “me”
Time / memory / spaceLines connecting now to an imagined then

Each depends on the layer below. Remove the bottom — all collapse.

The loop: Time needs memory. Memory needs a self. The self needs causation. Causation needs time. Karma needs all five. A closed circuit — internally coherent, externally unverifiable. A perfect story.

The punchline: The story IS the suffering. “I did this, so I deserve that.” The stitching creates guilt, blame, resentment, deserving, and false hope. Karma doesn’t explain suffering. Karma IS suffering — the suffering of narrating a self across time.

Without the lines: Appearances arising and passing. No before. No after. No because. No self. No debt.

Just this. Then this. Then this.

Part 4: Replicate This

Five inquiries. No belief required. Run them yourself.

1. Find the “Because” Next time you think “X happened because of Y” — stop. Find the “because” in X. Find it in Y. You won’t. It’s a third thing — a thought arising now. The connection is a line you’re drawing, not a feature of either event.

2. The Cherry-Picking Audit For one day, track every “karmic” pattern you notice — someone getting what they “deserve.” Then actively hunt counterexamples. The criminal who thrives. The saint who suffers. Watch the “law” dissolve under equal scrutiny.

3. The Single Frame Sit quietly. Notice raw experience — sounds, sensations, thoughts. Ask: does this moment contain the previous moment? The next? A “because”? It doesn’t. The past is a memory arising now. The future is anticipation arising now. Both are appearances in this moment — nowhere else.

4. The Constellation Recall three significant life events. Notice the lines your mind has already drawn — “the loss led to the gain,” “the meeting was meant to be.” Now see them as stars. Points of light. No lines. No story. Can you hold them line-free — even for a moment? That moment is reality without karma.

5. Run Any Quote Take any quote from Part 1. Test it against direct experience. Not the speaker’s authority. Not their followers. Direct experience. If time, memory, space, causation, and self are lines the mind draws — and karma requires all five — then karma is a constellation. Not a law.

Karma does not exist.

There is not even a “you” to accumulate it, a timeline for it to operate on, or a connection between events for it to describe.

There are only stars. And the lines you draw between them are yours to stop drawing.
